{"id":5828,"date":"2020-03-26T15:17:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-26T15:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fairlabor.org\/?post_type=report&#038;p=5828"},"modified":"2024-12-19T17:48:55","modified_gmt":"2024-12-19T17:48:55","slug":"burton-assessment-for-accreditation","status":"publish","type":"report","link":"https:\/\/www.fairlabor.org\/reports\/burton-assessment-for-accreditation\/","title":{"rendered":"Burton Assessment for Accreditation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"rich-text section\" data-dc-animate>\n    <div class=\" fade-animate \"  data-dc-animate-ref=\"fadeBlocks[]\">\n        \n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-large-font-size\">The FLA Board of Directors voted in February 2020 to accredit the social compliance program of Burton, a Vermont-based, privately held, snowboarding and mountain lifestyle company founded in 1977.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-large-font-size\">Accreditation by the FLA recognizes that Burton has systems in place to identify and remediate unfair labor practices in its global supply chain. Burton manufactures products in 72 contract factories in 10 countries and one owned prototyping facility in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section quote quote--mid-blue\" data-dc-animate>\n    <div class=\"quote__icon  fade-animate \" data-dc-animate-ref=\"fadeBlocks[]\">\n        <svg class=\"icon\" focusable=\"false\">\n            <use xlink:href=\"#icon-qoute\"><\/use>\n        <\/svg>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"quote__body  fade-animate \" data-dc-animate-ref=\"fadeBlocks[]\">\n    <p>Protecting the people who build our products has been important to us from the beginning when our founder and my late husband Jake Burton was hand-shaping snowboards in his barn in Vermont in the late 70s. Now, as a global brand, we remain\u202fcommitted to\u202fholding our suppliers\u202fto the highest standards\u202ffor fair labor practices and the ethical treatment of their workers. It is especially critical during this time of COVID-19\u202fand economic distress to continue to protect workers\u2019 rights throughout the world. We are honored to earn FLA accreditation and will continue to dedicate ourselves to improving labor practices in our supply chain. <\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n            <div class=\"quote__author  fade-animate \" data-dc-animate-ref=\"fadeBlocks[]\">\n        Donna Carpenter, chair of the Burton Board\n       <\/div>\n    \n    <\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"rich-text section\" data-dc-animate>\n    <div class=\" fade-animate \"  data-dc-animate-ref=\"fadeBlocks[]\">\n        \n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-large-font-size\">The FLA accreditation report is the result of a lengthy review of a company\u2019s social compliance program against international labor standards. The accreditation report on Burton\u2019s program noted the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-large-font-size\"><strong>Public promise:<\/strong> Burton publishes information about sustainability on its website, including a public list of its finished goods suppliers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-large-font-size\"><strong>Organizational<\/strong> <strong>commitment<\/strong>: Burton makes sustainability a high priority for the company with a team dedicated to sustainability, regular inter-departmental meetings on compliance matters, and a reporting structure that connects to company leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-large-font-size\"><strong>Responsible purchasing practices: <\/strong>Burton has developed strong relationships with its contract facilities and implemented purchasing practices that are in line with the FLA\u2019s Principles of Fair Labor &amp; Responsible Purchasing Practices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-large-font-size\"><strong>Extensive training: <\/strong>Burton provides training across its supply chain, including training on union engagement for the sustainability team, on its responsible purchasing practices policy for relevant staff, on workplace standards for company staff and supplier managers, and labor violation remediation for factory management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-large-font-size\"><strong>Comprehensive monitoring:<\/strong> Burton maintains a program for prospective and active suppliers that includes strong rating systems based on audit results.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"rich-text section\" data-dc-animate>\n    <div class=\" fade-animate \"  data-dc-animate-ref=\"fadeBlocks[]\">\n        \n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"template":"","location":[],"members":[358],"report_type":[357],"class_list":["post-5828","report","type-report","status-publish","hentry","members-burton","report_type-accreditation-report"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.fairlabor.org\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/report\/5828","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.fairlabor.org\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/report"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.fairlabor.org\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/report"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.fairlabor.org\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=5828"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"location","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.fairlabor.org\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/location?post=5828"},{"taxonomy":"members","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.fairlabor.org\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/members?post=5828"},{"taxonomy":"report_type","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.fairlabor.org\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/report_type?post=5828"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
