{"id":17709,"date":"2022-04-20T21:30:06","date_gmt":"2022-04-20T20:30:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fairlabor.org\/?page_id=17709"},"modified":"2025-01-28T16:11:58","modified_gmt":"2025-01-28T16:11:58","slug":"commitment-responsible-recruitment","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.fairlabor.org\/issues\/forced-labor\/commitment-responsible-recruitment\/","title":{"rendered":"Commitment to Responsible Recruitment"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"section header-impact  header-impact--mid-blue\">\n    <div class=\"header-impact__inner\">\n        <div class=\"header-impact__col\">\n            <h1 class=\"header-impact__title\">Apparel &amp; Footwear Industry Commitment to Responsible Recruitment<\/h1>\n                     <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"rich-text section\" data-dc-animate>\n    <div class=\" fade-animate \"  data-dc-animate-ref=\"fadeBlocks[]\">\n        \n\n<p>Originally initiated in October 2018, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafaglobal.org\/AAFA\/AAFA_News\/2018_Press_Releases\/123_Apparel_and_Footwear_Companies_Sign_New_Industry_Commitment_to_Responsible_Recruitment.aspx\">Apparel &amp; Footwear Industry Commitment to Responsible Recruitment<\/a> was founded to align the industry around a clear and resolute commitment to the fair treatment of foreign migrant workers in the global textiles, apparel, footwear, and travel goods supply chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the original Commitment to Responsible Recruitment, each signatory committed to working with its partners to create conditions where workers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do not pay for their jobs;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Retain control of their travel documents and have full freedom of movement; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are informed of the basic terms of their employment before joining the workforce.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, the American Apparel &amp; Footwear Association (AAFA) and the Fair Labor Association (FLA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairlabor.org\/aafa-and-fla-challenge-brands-to-renew-and-strengthen-commitment-to-responsible-recruitment\/\">re-launched and enhanced the Commitment<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The enhanced Commitment to Responsible Recruitment builds on learnings over the past five years. Signatories now commit to create conditions where workers receive a timely refund of any fees and costs paid to obtain or maintain their job, if such conditions were already imposed.<\/p>\n\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"section quote quote--dark-blue\" data-dc-animate>\n    <div class=\"quote__icon  fade-animate \" data-dc-animate-ref=\"fadeBlocks[]\">\n        <svg class=\"icon\" focusable=\"false\">\n            <use xlink:href=\"#icon-qoute\"><\/use>\n        <\/svg>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"quote__body  fade-animate \" data-dc-animate-ref=\"fadeBlocks[]\">\n    <p>By bringing together companies across the apparel and footwear industry, we help ensure that the employer pays for recruitment, not the workers. We are glad to see so many companies and their suppliers take these important steps and believe that the new provisions of the Commitment will drive real change for workers.<\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n            <div class=\"quote__author  fade-animate \" data-dc-animate-ref=\"fadeBlocks[]\">\n        Sharon Waxman, former FLA President and CEO\n       <\/div>\n    \n    <\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"rich-text section\" data-dc-animate>\n    <div class=\" fade-animate \"  data-dc-animate-ref=\"fadeBlocks[]\">\n        \n\n<p>The signing companies agree to work to fully and effectively implement these practices, to incorporate the Commitment into their social compliance standards within one-year of signing, and to periodically report the signatory\u2019s actions to imbed and implement the Commitment, such as through sustainability and\/or modern slavery legal disclosures. Together with their members and Commitment signatories, AAFA and FLA will continue to review the enhanced Commitment to identify areas of future improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div
